Stress from Work Harassment Not Covered by Workers’ Comp

A worker claimed workers’ comp benefits for mental stress caused by harassment on the job. The Appeals Tribunal said no dice. Although he was harassed at work, which is unacceptable, the onset of the stress was gradual and workers’ comp only covers stress that’s the result of an acute reaction to a discrete, traumatic event [2011-34-ADAD (Re), [2011] CanLII 28394 (NS WCAT, May 19, 2011].
