Two-thirds of school shootings in the United States since 1974 involved guns from students’ homes or homes of relatives. Some guns were gifts from parents, said a study from the US Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence estimates 70 million rifles, 65 million handguns, and 49 million shotguns are privately owned. Handguns figure in 80 per cent of firearm homicides. The American Journal of Public Health said 43 per cent of homes with both guns and children contained at least one unlocked firearm. Nearly 10 per cent of firearm owners keep guns unlocked and loaded. An estimated 1.4 million homes housing 2.6 million children have guns that children can access.
