Ask the Expert: How Do You Compensate Employees for Work Travel Time?

How Is an employee paid for travelling on the weekend to attend a meeting overseas?

It depends on the type of employee.

If this employee is truly salaried, i.e., his/her pay doesn’t vary based on differences in time spent, and if the person is a manager exempt from overtime requirements, there’s no requirement to pay anything.

If, on the other hand, the employee is paid hourly or otherwise subject to employment standards overtime rules, travel is considered paid working time as long as the employer requires the travel for work purposes.
