| Fight Fire with Knowledge |
Workplace fires account for many injuries and deaths, with approximately three percent of workplace fatalities being related to fire and explosions. Not only do workplace fires cause injuries and deaths, they also cause millions of dollars worth of property damage every year, leading to job losses. In fact, a great many of the workplaces destroyed by fire are never rebuilt.
October 3 to 9 is National Fire Prevention Week, making this a good time to hold a safety meeting on the topic.
Here are 5 ideas to help you plan and deliver your Fire Safety meetings:
1. There’s no time like the present to schedule a fire extinguisher training session. Your company’s safety department, in-plant fire brigade or community fire department will likely be willing to give a hands-on lesson.
2. Knowing fire escape routes is as important, or even more important, during times of change. So when things are being built, renovated or moved in your workplace, make sure your workers still can find two exits in an emergency. Bring (or sketch) a copy of a map of your workplace to your safety meeting and see who can point out the fire evacuation exit route.
3. When was your last fire drill? If you haven’t had one recently or if you have new hires, you’d better arrange one soon.
4. After your safety meeting, keep employees vigilant by doing a fire safety sweep—have different employees look for hazards in various areas of your workplace. A fresh set of eyes may notice things others take for granted.
5. Many people don’t realize how quickly dust can burn. Use your safety meeting as a reminder of fire-safe housekeeping at home—such as keeping clothes dryers and furnace filters free of lint and dust.
Unfortunately, fires are all too common in the workplace. This eLearning course in SafetySmart Online will teach employees how to respond to a fire emergency to stay safe. Employees will learn their responsibilities in a fire emergency, how to identify different alarm signals, evacuation routes and procedures and fire extinguisher use. | It happens all the time. People merrily work away on steep roofs without any form of fall protection. In an instant, any unprotected worker can lose footing or balance and fall over the edge. Look at all that debris on the ground, ready to provide a bone-crushing landing spot for anyone unfortunate enough to hurtle into it. (Elcosh.org) |

| BP Vows That New Safety Unit Will Uphold Safety Standards |
Facing severe public criticism over the massive oil leak it caused in the Gulf of Mexico, petroleum giant BP has formed a new safety unit to oversee safety company-wide.
The company’s new chief executive, Bob Dudley, says “there is a pressing need to rebuild trust in BP around the world” and it is hoped that the new safety unit will help do just that.
The safety unit will be under the direction of Mark Bly, who oversaw BP’s internal investigation into the Gulf oil spill. Safety staff will be imbedded in BP’s operations around the globe.
